The Gates, Central Park, NYC 2005
"The Gates" was excellent! It was a beautiful day, a little cold with the wind, but it was great to witness the wind blowing the fabric. They became like sails on a boat or flags "whippin'" and "snappin'". These sounds added an extra element to the experience. It was a good day to fly a kite. I would figure that it must be pure joy for the artists to witness all the people coming to the park to see their creation. I don't think I've ever seen that many folks on a crisp, winter day walking around NYC with smiles on their faces. It was pretty amazing. There were large school groups there as well as the usual joggers, wheel chairs, and cyclists, but it was certainly a place transformed. I don't think I have ever covered as much ground in Central Park, in one visit before that day. The gates allowed you to see the direction of pathways that were just over a hill or around the bend, inviting you to keep going. I liked when they led you to one of the many small tunnels in the park, and when you popped out on the other side there were more, and more, and more.
